Diversity is a Treasure We Shouldn't Take For Granted

Out of all the places I’ve been to, the US and Canada are the most open-minded places for diversity. For the most part, you can be whoever you want to be and you’ll find people who accept you somewhere, especially in urban settings. You can be transgender, gay, have green hair or a sleeve of tattoos and you will find others like you. We’ve outlawed discrimination in the workplace, and we have more rights and opportunities than most countries.

Individualism is so strong in the US, versus other countries where people must fit in. You could be killed for being different in a lot of places.

In my high school, we had a transgender homecoming king nominee. A small handful of guys in my class started ranting on Twitter about how we shouldn’t accept him as a nominee, but a swarm of people came to his defense. It felt so nice to have plenty of people sticking up for him. 10 years ago, it might have been completely different.

My generation is becoming more and more accepting of all sorts of diversity. We are judging others less and less. We’re more aware of others emotions because of social media. We are making it easier for LGBT people to accept themselves because so many characters on our media are representing them. We now have transgender government officials. Gay marriage has been legal for years now.

We are becoming more and more educated about our differences. It’s an amazing change that our society is making, and it’s something not to take for granted. We should be grateful for our freedoms and rights.
